Ruthless & Brilliant

M.G. Siegler, 500ish:

They’re doing so many different things, but there are common threads that tie them all together. Amazon Prime. The Cloud. Etc. But Amazon is one of the only companies that seems able to tie such wide-ranging areas together in such a cohesive package that not only makes sense, but sets a standard for efficiency and execution.

This is the company that effectively killed the big bookstores and then started opening big bookstores. They’re pissing on those grave sites to water the seedlings from the trees they chopped down. Ruthless. Brilliant. Amazon.

The place where we went solely for books, has now become the place where we buy almost everything. They're now taking on companies like Netflix, and soon enough, they'll be competing with the likes of FedEx and other shippers. All this while powering the backend for most of the tech services we use every single day, and making (possibly) Oscar-winning films.

And soon we'll have stores so smart, we just walk in and walk out with everything we need. No need to wait in line to pay. Or have things delivered to our door step in under an hour, just by asking a black cylinder named Alexa to do it for us.

And who knows what else.
